KinamaKinama Women’s Project

In April 2009 RoH opened a day centre for vulnerable women and single mothers. The centre is situated in Kinama, an area of the city that was deserted until 2002, residents having fled the fighting there during the war. The Kinama Centre is a place where women can come to for help, advice or just a listening ear.

At the centre we opened a sewing project where ten women at a time can come daily to learn to sew. The year long programme consists of six months training then six months working as tailors on site, during which time the women can build up a client base and learn business skills. At the end of the year, the women graduate and leave with a sewing machine which RoH has donated to them to set up their own business. By providing a means for these single mothers to take care of their family, RoH aims to prevent their children ending up on the streets – prevention is always better than cure!
